Friday Faves: Beacon Place, Lake Bluff Estates Tour & One More Fun Summer Dress

August 21, 2020 By Ann Marie Scheidler Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! It has been one of those weeks. I’m thinking the weekend is going to feel really good.

Here are a few favorites I discovered this week.

Beacon Place Virtual 5k: On September 12-13, young people all over Chicago and beyond will join together to walk with their neighbors in a virtual 5k to raise money for the Beacon Place community. 100% of the funds raised from this event will support their educational programs for children in kindergarten through 12th grade. Beacon Place is a community center in southeast Waukegan with programs for kids and adults. It was established in 2012 by a group of dedicated and inspired individuals who recognized a significant need and decided to do something about it. They acquired an abandoned home and turned it into a community center focused on delivering programs around food and nutrition, overall health, academic support, and life skills development.

To register for the Beacon Place 5k where you can organize your own team and walk socially distant with other virtual Beacon Place teams any time the weekend of September 12-13, click here.

Lake Bluff Walking Tours: A casino in Lake Bluff? Can you imagine? One family did, and in the mid-1920s looked into developing their prominent lakefront estate into a 150-home subdivision and hotel, possibly including a casino. Fortunately the plan never went further than the idea stage, and the property, Crab Tree Farm, today is one of the crown jewels of the Chicago area. Speaking of crown jewels, did you know that a Russian princess held court in a mansion near Sheridan Road for much of the 20th Century, after marrying into the Armour family? And that a Lake Bluff manor owner was one of the first interior designers to incorporate Lucite into furniture, sparking the mid-century modern affinity for acrylic resin, back in the middle of the last century?

These are just a few of the fascinating anecdotes shared in the three newest tours on the Lake Bluff Walking Tours app created by the Lake Bluff History Museum: Moffett Road Estates, Green Bay Road Estates, and Sheridan Road Estates. The first two – the Moffett Road and Green Bay Road tours – provide a wonderful outdoor activity, while the Sheridan Road tour is best taken as an “armchair tour” to be enjoyed from the comfort of home, since most of the tour discusses private property not visible from a public street.

The Lake Bluff Walking Tours app is a gift to the community from the Lake Bluff History Museum and Lake Bluff 125 Committee with support from Abbott in honor of the village’s 125th anniversary. This app was initially unveiled in May. You can download the Lake Bluff Walking Tours app from the Apple App Store (available now) and Google Play.

The Perfect Dress: And last but not least is my favorite Royal Shirt Dress from Tuckernuck in this dusty blue color way. This wrinkle-free gem is perfect for getting you from summer to fall without missing a beat. Click here to snag one of these for your closet. (My fun earrings are from St. Armands Designs…I love their stuff!)

Have a super weekend!

xo,

I made this spinach, cherry tomato, and Italian sa I made this spinach, cherry tomato, and Italian sausage pasta for dinner last night and it was so good! This recipe is inspired by one of my favorite bloggers, @lizadams from Hello Adams Family. It's one of those recipes that can be doctored to be just the way you like it, and you can swap out the pasta for your favorite gluten-free version if you like. This is a great dinner idea to add to your rotation. Happy Monday! ❤️⁣

Just a quick Sunday thank-you note for all of the Just a quick Sunday thank-you note for all of the support you gave to the blog post I shared on Friday. ❤️ My daughter Annie's thoughts about the importance of our high school reopening definitely connected with a lot of you and your children.⁣
⁣
The upcoming school board election on April 6 is going to be critical to our schools fully reopening with teachers in the building. Please take the time to read about the candidates running and be sure to vote for the people who will make this happen.⁣
 ⁣
We are certainly all in this together! Hang in there! xo ❤️
Last night at dinner I told my family that I was g Last night at dinner I told my family that I was going to have to take a break from social media. I had finally hit my limit of crazy when it comes to the discussion of our local high school reopening. While I realize there is no easy path to making this happen, it must. The reasons for not opening no longer make any sense to me.⁣
⁣
As I was on my soapbox at the dinner table, I watched my daughter Annie’s body language completely change. (She's pictured here in this photo with her brother Leo.) When I asked her what was up, she said that no one has really asked her what she thinks of the high school’s current learning environment. So I asked Annie if she would be up for sharing her thoughts about the current status of LFHS--and she was--and I've captured them in today's blog post. ⁣
⁣
Please know, I just share Annie’s answers in the hopes of shining a light on another perspective when it comes to reopening our schools. Our family LOVES Lake Forest High School. Annie is our fourth child to attend there. My husband and I took a leap from the Catholic education we grew up in to send our kids to the public school and our expectations have been exceeded every step of the way until this last year. The pandemic caught us all off guard, and grace must be given for that. But it’s time to figure this out. ⁣
⁣
With that said, please click on the link in my bio to read Annie's thoughts.❤️
Friends, it's been a doozy of a couple of days. Ca Friends, it's been a doozy of a couple of days. Car troubles, computer problems, even my oven decided to give me a run for my money. But we're back at it today, tackling those to-dos, and feeling grateful for the heatwave! ☀️☀️☀️⁣

How's your week going?⁣
