Lake Forest’s Sarah Somers was ready to shake things up. After 15 years in the financial world, she longed to do something more creative. This wife, mother to 10-year-old Lydia, and all-around kind and gracious dynamo is the perfect example of a woman who thought about changing careers–and did!
Last year, leveraging her experience from working with startups, Sarah launched DESEDA, a line of luxe silk scarves. Each hand-finished square is printed in Italy and designed in collaboration with artists from around the world.
“I love the idea of being able to come up with a timeless piece that I can bring directly to the consumer,” says Sarah, whose love for scarves began when it was one of the only ways she could make a fashion statement when her former work life required a more conservative look. “I also really like working with artists from all over the globe to tell beautiful stories.”
According to Sarah, scarves can be worn by any one, of any age, of any size, or any style. Sarah creates scarves in different sizes to accommodate different styles. “In this world where people value a more minimalist way of life,” Sarah says, “people can have that capsule wardrobe and just change things up with a scarf. I’ve noticed that even the pieces in my own closet have become more simple as I began wearing more scarves.”
This Friday, September 27, DESEDA will open as a pop-up shop in Lake Forest’s Market Square for a three-week stay. “I’m so excited to share DESEDA with Lake Forest and be part of the community’s retails space,” she adds. “Interacting with customers is one of the main reasons DESEDA came to be.”
